Posted 13th July 2009: Natural Compost Accelerator

Certain plants can be added to the compost heap to speed up the biodegrading effect. The heat they release accelerates decay and kills weed seeds.  The plants include: Comfrey, Chamomile, Yarrow.

Posted 28th July 2009: Comfrey Liquid Feed

Rich in Potassium, Calcium, Iron and Manganese. Pack a plastic tub full of Comfrey leaves (wear gloves). Pour on a pint of rain water, add a lid and weigh down with a brick. Cover for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks the leaves should have started to rot, making a brown liquid. Sieve the liquid and compost unwanted leave material. This liquid can be stored for up to 6 months in an air tight container.

Dilute liquid with water for root feeding 25ml per litre of water, for foliar feed, add 12ml of the liquid to 1ltr of water.

Posted 8th August 2009: Rhubarb Crown Trouble

If a Rhubarb crown is failing, dig up the plant and split it up. Re-plant in the soil after adding organic matter or manure. Water well and wait for regeneration. If the Rhubarb crown starts to rot, this could be due to over watering or air in the soil around the plant itself.
